STATEMENT BY THE DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER AND MINISTER OF FOREIGN
AFFAIRS
ASSOC. PROF. TURGAY AVCI ON THE ANNIVERSARY OF 27-28 JANUARY
RESISTANCE
On the 50th anniversary of the events of 27-28
January, which was an important turning pointing in Turkish
Cypriot people’s struggle for existence, we remember once more
our beloved Martyrs, who sacrificed their lives to make these
lands our homeland.
27-28 January is an important landmark in the struggle for
existence of Turkish Cypriots, who refused to yield to the
Greek-Greek Cypriot persecution and their aim at uniting the
island with Greece- Enosis and displayed their determination to
resist against British colonialism.
On 27-28 January 1958, Turkish Cypriot people with their heroic
resistance clearly proved to the world that they wanted to live
as free people on the island of Cyprus.
This important event which was written in the annals of Turkish
Cypriot history with golden letters as “A Day of Communal
Struggle and Resistance Against Colonialism”, is a symbol of the
struggle of our people against the Greek Cypriots who aimed at
depriving the Turkish Cypriot people of their right to exist as
free people.
On the 50th anniversary of 27-28 January, we once more
commemorate and remember our beloved martyrs with respect and
gratitude and we salute our courageous veterans. |
