GREEK
CYPRIOTS BEGIN TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT ANNAN
PLAN IS NOT IN TURKISH CYPRIOT INTERESTS

Greek
Cypriot journalist, Loucas G. Charalambous, on 14
September, 2003, in the Greek Cypriot ‘Sunday
Mail’ wrote that the UN Secretary General’s
settlement plan for Cyprus was not in the interests
of the Turkish Cypriots and that in a settlement
based on the Annan Plan it would be the Turkish
Cypriots who would give concessions, whereas the
Greek Cypriots would be receiving specific things.
Charalambous
wrote: “The settlement plan we have in front of us
gives our side specific things. First, and most
importantly, the withdrawal of the Turkish troops;
second, the repatriation of two thirds of the
settlers; third, Famagusta; fourth, Morphou; fifth,
other large chunks of territory. There is no other
way, apart from through signing the Annan Plan, for
these to be returned to the Greek Cypriots”.
He
stated that in reality, in a settlement based on
such a plan the Greek Cypriots would not be giving
up anything, it would be the Turkish Cypriot side
who would be doing all the giving. As a result, he
added: “95,000 displaced people would have the
property rights which they lost 30 years ago
restored to them and would be able to return to
their homes. The rest would be entitled. |
