A Historical Day…
It is 1 April, 2005 today…
An important date in Cyprus history…
EOKA terror organization was founded fifty years
ago that time under the leadership of Grivas…
I believe that everybody must learn by all means
the brutal attacks of EOKA and particularly what
Makarios and Grivas did…
Those communities which do not know their past
cannot give a direction to their future…
Nonetheless, either young or elderly, everyone
has to learn EOKA completely…
If we do not learn and comprehend the
undertakings carried out against the Turkish
Cypriots after 1963 by this organization, which
initially fought against the British Colonial Regime
and killed many people, we cannot make a solid peace
agreement.
We should not either forget that it was Tassos
Papadopoulos who was one of the leaders of EOKA, who
strongly opposed to 1959-60 Zurich and London
Agreements and opposed obstinately Archbishop
Makarios by saying "don’t sign this agreement"…
With no doubt, a person who opposed the 1960
Agreements, would also oppose the Annan Plan…
Furthermore, the 1960 Treaties did not give a
territory to the Turkish Cypriot and not split the
island into two parts…
They did not envisage the establishment of a
common senate and the representation of the Turkish
Cypriots in this senate with equal numbers…
1960 Treaties allowed only three Turkish Cypriot
representatives in the Council of Ministers with
ten…
However, they gave ‘the right of unilateral
intervention’ to the guarantor states…
This is the main issue Papadopoulos and EOKA
members are strongly opposing…
I think, reading a paragraph of EOKA
Association’s statement which was published
yesterday (30 March 2005) in the Greek Cypriot daily
‘Politis’ would be sufficient to learn the
realities…
Let’s read together:
" We do not want the slavery provided by the
Annan plan, but we want equality and equality in
front of law. We want the withdrawal of the settlers
and the Turkish troops, abolition of the right of
intervention and we want all the Cypriots to live in
peace."
Didn’t we live peacefully until 1963?..
In fact, the right of intervention existed
then!..
Finally, look what happened?
Hundreds of Turks were killed…
More than a hundred Turkish villages were
destroyed…
Therefore, it should be a solution that none of
these would be repeated…
A solution that would include substantial
guaranties and the right of intervention… |
