The parliamentary
elections in the Greek Cypriot side will be held on
21 May 2006.
Of course the
election will be very competitive.
DISI, in
particular, who is fed up of being the opposition,
is planning to be in the lead and be the winning
party. DISI Leader Nikos Anastasiades has already
started his campaign.
The previous day
the Greek Cypriot Interior Minister Andreas Hristu
announced the election areas and the number of
voters. There are 1,300 ballot centres and 6
election areas (Paphos, Limasol, Larnaca, Nicosia,
Famagusta and Kyrenia). The Greek Cypriot
parliamentary elections will cost 2.5 million Cyprus
Pounds. This time no ballot boxes will be set up
abroad.
According to the
existing election law, the Assembly will be
dispelled on 13 April, political parties will submit
their candidate lists on 3 May, and on 5 May all
election centres and ballot box numbers will finally
be announced.
The first election
results will be collected from the imaginary
election area of Kyrenia, followed by Paphos. The
party results from the other areas will be finalized
between 21:00 and 22:00 hours. Towards the morning
the names of those who have been elected as deputies
will be identified. The counting will all be done by
hand.
This year, Turkish
Cypriots settled in South Cyprus and registered on
the electoral roll will use their votes for the
first time. Turkish Cypriot voters will be informed
about the elections and how to use their vote
through advertisements placed in local English
language dailies and television and radio progammes
that are prepared in Turkish.
In addition to the
electoral list for the local elections, a further
30,000 people have also registered in the electoral
list, thus increasing the total number of voters
from 470,000 to 500,000.
The breakdown of "GREEK
CYPRIOT SETTLERS" in this electoral list of 500,000
is approximately as follows:
Ponthus Greek
Cypriots: 60,000 - 70,000
Citizens of the
former Soviet Republic: 30,000
Christians who
escaped from Lebanon: 15,000 - 20,000
Immigrants from
Greece: 100,000
Asylum seeker
Kurds: 2,500 - 3,000
Asylum seeker
citizens from third countries: 9,500
Total "Greek
Cypriot Settlers": approximately 230,000
According to the
existing 1964 law, any Greek citizen who has done
his military service in Cyprus automatically becomes
a citizen of the Republic of Cyprus (Greek Cypriot).
For years, there has been 1 Greek Regiment, 2
Battalions of Greek Commandos, and hundreds of Greek
officers in the Greek Cypriot National Guard in
Cyprus. These privates and army officers, whom
change every two years, automatically become
citizens. Most Greek Cypriots go to study in Greece,
get married and return to Cyprus. Their partners
also immediately become citizens.
The Ponthus Greek
Cypriots and citizens of the former Soviet Republic
were already made citizens soon after they came to
the island in 1974. Opening their arms to the
wealthy Christians, who fled the war in Lebanon, the
Greek Cypriots also made them citizens. Whereas,
according to EU norms, Kurds and citizens from third
countries who seek asylum automatically become
citizens.
The total number
of "Greek Cypriot Settlers" is 230,000 and from this
figure the number of people who will use their vote
is approximately 160,000. In other words, 32% of the
current total.
Without looking at
themselves, Greek Cypriots automatically refer to
our citizens who came to the TRNC from Turkey 30
years ago and have been living here ever since as "Settlers"
and want them all to go back.
In that case, what
will happen to its own settlers? Could someone
please tell me.
Papadopoulos was
elected with 51% of the votes. Since the first 16%
of this vote came from the settlers, it means that
the percentage of Greek Cypriots who voted for him
was 35%. In this situation, is Papadopoulos's
Presidency legitimate?
