ADVERTISING EMBARGO FOR TURKISH CYPRIOTS
It has been reported that Greek Cypriot dailies have
imposed an advertising embargo on Turkish Cypriots wanting to advertise in
Greek Cypriot dailies.
Following the opening of the borders on 23 April 2003,
the Greek Cypriot ‘Politis’ daily published an advertisement for a
Turkish Cypriot hotel but, after receiving strong protests for this from the
Church and Greek Cypriot working circles it has now rejected to publish
further Turkish Cypriot advertisements its daily. Other Greek Cypriot
dailies have also adopted an advertising embargo on Turkish Cypriots wanting
to advertise in their dailies.
Speaking about the issue, the President of the Cyprus
Turkish Advertisers’ Association, Zeki Tasci, pointing out that this was
not an act of goodwill and that good will should be reciprocal, said: “We
approach Greek Cypriot customers with caution. We propose that a mutual
solution be found to this issue”.
