NEW GREEK CYPRIOT HYPOCRICY (09.04.02)
A new hypocrisy against Turkish Cypriot
interests has been undertaken by the Greek Cypriot administration.
Whilst the Greek Cypriot rejectionist
attitudes are increasing against the proposal drawn up by the "Brussels
Group" for importing diary products from the TRNC, the Greek Cypriot
Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou announced that "they wouldn’t forbid
trade with the Turkish Cypriot side through the green line since they fear
from international reaction". However, voices from the Greek Cypriot
political and civilian organisations are increasing, arguing that
cross-community trade would mean the recognition of the Turkish Republic of
Northern Cyprus and that this would lead to its economic welfare.
In the meantime, negative applications in
Pyla are continuing. The Greek Cypriot civilians and the tourists who
purchase goods from the Turkish Cypriot shops are fined by the Greek Cypriot
authorities, with the aim of preventing the economic wealth of the Turkish
Cypriot inhabitants of Pyla.
The
hypocrisy of the Greek Cypriot administration in trade is undertaken in
other sectors, as well. The Greek Cypriot administration which is
responsible for all kinds of embargoes imposed on the TRNC, deviates from
its implementations when their own interests are concerned. The Greek
Cypriot Council of Ministers has recently granted the Turkish Cypriot
footballer Sabri Selden the "Cypriot citizenship". It was
clarified before that, Selden may not be granted citizenship since his
mother is from Turkey . It was underlined by the Chairman of the AEK
football team Mr. Ksenis on 22 April 2002, that "Sabri Selden’s
participation in the team is not because of his abilities but, of political
reasons".
