MIROGLU: "EMBARGOES VIOLATE TURKISH CYPRIOTS' FREEDOM OF COMMUNICATION"
October 9, which marks 'World Postal Day' and is the anniversary of the Universal Postal Union's foundation, will today be celebrated in the TRNC. To mark the significane of the day a special stamp will also be printed on
envelopes.
In his message issued, Salih Miroglu, the Minister for Public Works and Transport said the Turkish Cypriots' freedom to communicate was being violated because of the embargoes imposed on the TRNC.
Miroglu said: "Although the principle of the freedom of communication, which is the basic philosophy of the Universal Postal Union, that was founded 129 years ago, is to provide an international and single characteristic for the works of the postal services; to improve postal services in all areas; and thus yield the freedom of communication to people for universal activity and cooperation, a series of embargoes imposed on the TRNC, even in the field of postal services, means that this principle is being violated in the TRNC…"
Miroglu added: "Just like in all other areas, despite the obstacles and drawbacks that we are faced with in the field of communication, with facilities provided to us by Turkey and our ongoing traditional brotherhood and cooperation, we are continuing our studies to overcome these existing
problems".
