ISRAELI TOURISTS DEPORTED FOR WANTING TO
CROSS OVER TO TRNC FROM SOUTH CYPRUS (20.10.2003)
A group of approximately 50 Israeli
tourists, who arrived at Larnaca Airport on 16 October, 2003, was deported
by the Greek Cypriot Administration because they wanted to cross over to the
TRNC.
According to the Greek Cypriot daily
"Fileleftheros", the coach carrying the Israeli tourists from
Larnaca Airport to the TRNC was stopped by Greek Cypriot police at Gossi
village, with the excuse that they could not cross over to the TRNC, and
were deported back to Israel.
The Greek Cypriot Minister for Public
Order and Justice, Doros Theodoru, said he approved of the policy of
deporting Israeli tourists who wanted to cross over to the TRNC.
He also added that Israeli tourists who
wanted to cross over to the TRNC for gambling and staying in the hotels
would immediately be deported and the relevant law envisaging the punishment
of those Greek Cypriots who were assisting these tourists for this reason
was under evaluation.
