IRELAND
PUT BRAKES ON FLIGHTS TO THE TRNC (29.04.02)
The decision of Ireland refusing permission for
flights of Cyprus Turkish Airlines from Dublin to TRNC even though aircraft
would stop first in Turkey, was evaluated as a historic decision by the
Greek Cypriots. According to Greek Cypriot daily “Alithia”, Ireland took
this decision after heavy and coordinated initiatives of the Greek Cypriot
Foreign Ministry and South Cyprus’ Embassy in Dublin.
It
was reported that Commerce, Industry and Tourism Minister Nicos Rolandis
referring to such embargoes imposed upon TRNC as a great political and
economic success, excluded TRNC’s entrance into Ireland’s tourism
market. It was also claimed that TRNC had expended 300 thousand Euro in
order to enter into Ireland market.
