GREEK CYPRIOT MP: WE ARE GUILTY AND I AM ASHAMED (06.12.04)
The main opposition party, DISI's MP in South Cyprus,
Hristos Burguridis, pointing out that in 1964 and 1965 the Greek Cypriots had
degraded and adopted a hostile stance towards the Turkish Cypriots, said this
was a "crime" and he was deeply ashamed of his attitude and behaviour against
the Turkish Cypriots during that time.
In an interview with the Greek Cypriot daily,
'Fileleftheros', which was published yesterday (5 December), Burguridis said
when his was born he was breast fed by a Turkish Cypriot woman.
He said:
"In those days, I was involved in the events and thought
that the Turkish Cypriots wanted to destroy the Cyprus Republic and were our
enemy. Because I believed my thoughts about the Turkish Cypriots were correct,
I acted together with those Greek Cypriots who turned the Turkish Cypriot
peoples' lives into hell. I am deeply ashamed of my attitude and behaviour
against the Turkish Cypriots at that time".
Asked how he had treated the Turkish Cypriots at that time, Burguridis
said: "We didn't treat them as our equals. We thought they were people we
could always make fun of. We were so mean and blind and the Turkish Cypriots
were right to complain about us".
