GREEK CYPRIOT
ADMINISTRATION DEPORTS ISRAELI TOURISTS CROSSING OVER TO TRNC
The
Greek Cypriot Administration has deported a group of Israeli tourists, who
wanted to cross over to the North, from the island last Thursday (July 24).
According
to the Greek Cypriot press, the Israeli tourists in question, who had arrived
in South Cyprus through Larnaca Airport on July 24, whilst trying to cross
over to the TRNC were stopped by Greek Cypriot officials and upon the order of
Doros Theodorou, the Greek Cypriot Minister for Justice and Public Order, were
deported back to Israel.
Minister
Theodorou said that the Greek Cypriot Administration has taken the decision
not to allow the entry of foreign tourists into South Cyprus who later want to
cross over to the TRNC and gamble.
It
was also stated that despite the fact that up until now no action has been
taken by the Greek Cypriot Administration against those Greek Cypriots who
cross over to the TRNC, civilian police from the Greek Cypriot Administration
have started to follow and gather information about those Greek Cypriots
crossing over to gamble in the casinos and stay in the hotels in the TRNC and Greek
Cypriots are now very frightened because there is the threat that, in due
course, these people will be arrested.
The
Greek Cypriot daily “Haravgi” reported that although foreign travel
companies, which include South Cyprus in their tourism programs, also want to
organize tours to the TRNC as part of their tourism programs, the Greek
Cypriot Travel Agents Association have issued a statement to the effect that
“before a settlement of the Cyprus issue, there is no possibility of any
cooperation, whatsoever, with travel agencies in the TRNC”.
