Greek Press
disclosed the secret message sent by Greek Cypriot leader Papadopoulos to
the USA:
“WE WILL EXTERMINATE ALL
THE TURKS”
During the 32nd Anniversary of the Turkish
Peace Operation, a new analysis about the events on the island was published.
According to the analysis, which appeared in the Greek press, Tassos
Papadopoulos, who was a minister in 1964, wanted all the Turks in the island
to be massacred.
The Greek Daily
Eleftherotipia on 21 July 2006 published an analysis carried out by a Greek
Cypriot journalist Makarios Drusiottis. According to the analysis, following
the bloody attacks by the Greek Cypriot guerilla against the Turkish
Cypriots in 1964, Turkey was planning to carry out a military operation to
Cyprus and Greek Cypriot leader Tassos Papadopoulos who was a minister
during that period sent a message to the USA on behalf of the Greek Cypriot
government.
NTVMSNBC reported
on 22 July 2006 that Papadopoulos in his message wrote that, “According to
the estimations we made, by the time Turkish fleet arrives to the island
within 75 minutes with the aim of providing our own defense we are
determined to exterminate all the Turks in the island. We possess the
necessary plans and means in order to materialize this”
The analysis
stated that Papadopoulos had similar threats after 3 years. According to the
expressions of the then Greek Land Forces Commander, during an extraordinary
military council meeting Greek Cypriot leader suggested that if Turkey had
carried out a military operation in Cyprus, all the Turks on the island
should have been wiped out.
The analysis also
reminded that the Greek Parliament with the aim of proving that Greek
Cypriots were living in Cyprus ‘opened the Cyprus file’ between 1986-1988.
However, it was
stressed that with the fear that secret expressions which were not announced
until that day could have justified Turkey’s military intervention in the
island, the Cyprus file was closed forever.
