SPECIAL BRITISH UNIT TO
OPPOSE GREEK CYPRIOT PROTESTORS (02.07.02)
According
to the Greek Cypriot daily ‘Haravgi’, under the headline, ‘War starts in
Akrotiri’, as a result of the work being carried out to build a giant
antenna in the Salt Lake of Akrotiri, officials from the British bases have
brought in a special unit from the U.K to South Cyprus to deal with the Greek
Cypriot protestors.
The
daily reported that the special unit to deal with the protestors would use
plastic bullets.
In
a press conference given, officials from the British bases said that the
antenna in question presented no harm to neither the environment nor to human
health.
The
Greek Cypriot Foreign Minister, Yannakis Cassoulides, in a statement issued on
the issue stated that, related to a report prepared by foreign scientists,
they are waiting for the report from the Greek Cypriot Ministry for
Agriculture, Natural Resources and the Environment.
The
daily also added that with the initiatives of the Greek Cypriot
Environmentalists Movement, representatives from Greek Cypriot political
parties also participated in the protest meeting taking place at Akrotiri, and
that those participating in the protest meeting walked to the area where the
antenna is going to be build and camped out there all night in tents.
