According
to news received from the Greek Cypriot press, as reported in Turkish Cypriot
press, during efforts for the installation of a giant aerial at Akrotiri,
Greek Cypriot demonstrators clashed with British bases (SBA) security
personnel yesterday.
Accordingly,
tight security measures have been taken in the region by the British bases
authorities. The army. The soldiers of the special unit from U.K. and the
policemen from Dhekelia and Episkopi bases (consisting of Greek Cypriot
policemen), have brought to the region to deal with the Greek Cypriot
protestors.
According
to the Greek Cypriot daily “Haravgi”, around 20-30 environmentalists led
by Yorgos Perdikis,
the Greek Cypriot Environmentalist Movement MP, camped overnight
outside the site to prevent heavy machinery from entering the area, which will
be used for the installation of the aerial.
It
was also reported that the SBA police attempted to drag the protestors off the
road and that after heavy pushing and shoving the protestors were finally
removed from the area.
It
was also reported that in a statement issued yesterday, AKEL criticised the
British stance,
their use of force and accused the Greek Cypriot administration of
remaining reticent.
The
Greek Cypriot daily “Simerini”, in its news under the headline, ‘Brutal
Clash’, evaluated the Akrotiri events as a “boiling cauldron”.
It
was reported that the Spokesman of the Greek Cypriot administration, Mihallis
Papapetru evaluated the events as useless and said it is a lie and not
acceptable that the place of the aerial would cause a problem.
