AKROTIRI EVENTS (03.07.02)

According to news received from the Greek Cypriot press, as reported in Turkish Cypriot press, during efforts for the installation of a giant aerial at Akrotiri, Greek Cypriot demonstrators clashed with British bases (SBA) security personnel yesterday.

Accordingly, tight security measures have been taken in the region by the British bases authorities. The army. The soldiers of the special unit from U.K. and the policemen from Dhekelia and Episkopi bases (consisting of Greek Cypriot policemen), have brought to the region to deal with the Greek Cypriot protestors.

According to the Greek Cypriot daily “Haravgi”, around 20-30 environmentalists led by Yorgos Perdikis,  the Greek Cypriot Environmentalist Movement MP, camped overnight outside the site to prevent heavy machinery from entering the area, which will be used for the installation of the aerial.

It was also reported that the SBA police attempted to drag the protestors off the road and that after heavy pushing and shoving the protestors were finally removed from the area.

It was also reported that in a statement issued yesterday, AKEL criticised the British stance,  their use of force and accused the Greek Cypriot administration of remaining reticent.

The Greek Cypriot daily “Simerini”, in its news under the headline, ‘Brutal Clash’, evaluated the Akrotiri events as a “boiling cauldron”.

It was reported that the Spokesman of the Greek Cypriot administration, Mihallis Papapetru evaluated the events as useless and said it is a lie and not acceptable that the place of the aerial would cause a problem.
