GREEK CYPRIOT ADMINISTRATION OBSTRUCTS
JOURNALISTS (03.10.2005)
The Greek Cypriot administration prevented
members of the Turkish Cypriot Foreign Press Club from following the so-called
"Independence Day" celebrations on 1 October.
The Foreign Press Club Secretary-General
Selim Sayarı's written application made to the Greek Cypriot Public
Information Office requesting permission for its Turkish Cypriot members to
follow the military ceremony was "rejected".
Foreign Press Club officials have conveyed
these developments to UN officials, as well as TRNC state and government
officials and by taking the issue to an international platform will request
that an end be put to preventing the "freedom to gather news" and that TRNC
officials take measures in line with 'reciprocity'.
Shortly after the border gates opened on 23
April 2003, the Turkish representatives of Turkish press organs in the TRNC
were prevented from crossing over to South Cyprus by the Greek Cypriot
administration.
