GENERAL DIMITRIS KANTEPE: “TURKISH CYPRIOTS IN CYPRUS SHOULD BE THROWN INTO
THE SEA” (05.08.02)
The Greek Cypriot weekly ‘Kipros Simera’, in
its ‘Defence and Diplomacy’ page published an analysis by retired
Strategic Analyst, Major-General Dimitris Kantepe, entitled, “We can’t
achieve peace by shouting for ‘peace’…Greco-Turkish dispute is at a
critical turning point…”
In his analysis, Kantepe defended that the Greek
Cypriot side has three options: option one, the definition of borders with the
Turkish Cypriot side, the start of negotiations on refugees and property
compensation, which have been put on hold; option two, to insist that Cyprus
is a unitary state; option three, which he defended, as well as not accepting
a fait accompli, Hellenes should take the decision to get their rights through
the use of force. Kantepe added that in order to do this the Cyprus government
could use the Greek Cypriot National Guard, which has been reinforced with
70,000 soldiers and contemporary weapons and also implement the joint defence
doctrine (it has with Greece). Kantepe explained his offer as driving the
Turkish Cypriots into the sea, and thus liberating North Cyprus, and it would
then unite with the Cyprus Republic, which is where it belongs.
