AN
AMAZING STATEMENT BY PAPADOPOULOS: “I WOULD NOT SIGN THE UN DOCUMENT EVEN IF
DENKTAÞ DID...”
Greek
Cypriot Leader Tassos Papadopoulos made a statement published in the Greek
Cypriot newspaper Politis on 23 November 2003 and said “he wouldn’t sign
the UN Document during The Hague meeting even if President Rauf Raif Denktaþ
did”.
Replying a question by the Politis reporter,
Papadopoulos pointed out that rumours were heard that he was ready to
sign the document prepared by the United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan
if President Denktaþ had signed it. Papadopoulos underlined that “he would
never sign the document”.
Tassos Papadopoulos argued that the Annan Plan was
unacceptable since it “confirmed fait accompli in Cyprus” and required
modifications. Whilst listing the reasons for his rejection of the document,
Papadopoulos noted that the UN Document had foreseen within its context in
March the establishment of a new partnership based on two separate constituent
states with recognising their whole out functioning elements, legislations and
state organs. He asked, “Do we seek such a settlement?”.
In the end of the interview
Papadopoulos reiterated that their approach to the issue is as it was
determined by the Greek Cypriot National Council which previously declared
that it accepted the UN Document merely as a basis for negotiations. He
pointed out that if called upon by the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, the
Greek Cypriot Administration would be ready to start negotiations.
