GREEK CYPRIOT FILM PRODUCER PANIKOS
HRISTANTU UNDER FIRE
Greek Cypriot circles in the South reacted
strongly to Greek Cypriot film producer Panikos Hristantu's film 'Akama',
which has not been completed and is not being shown.
The Greek Cypriot side is trying to organise
an extensive 'reaction campaign' against the film which depicts EOKA's
activities during 1958. Following the persistent articles carried out by the
Greek Cypriot daily 'Mahi' to silence Hristantu and the effects that his film
would create, now the Greek Cypriot television channel 'Antenna' is trying to
organise the former EOKA fighters to take action against the film. Meanwhile,
fascist circles in the South, alleging that one of the characters in the film
resembles one of the former EOKA fighter's, are trying to provoke this former
EOKA fighter's family to object to Hristantu's film.
It will be remembered that Panikos Hristantu
had previously filmed the 'Our Wall' film with Turkish Cypriot academic Niyazi
Kızılyurek, which was not shown on any of the Greek Cypriot television
channels in South Cyprus.
