GREEK
CYPRIOTS SHOWED THEIR REAL INTENTION (02.10.02)
At
a time when the direct negotiations are gaining pace in the search for a
lasting solution to the Cyprus issue, the Greek Cypriot administration
yesterday held a big display of sophisticated weapons’ systems it possesses
at a military parade which indicated the fact that the real intention of the
Greek Cypriot side is not to establish peace, but to expand its control over
the whole of the island.
The
Greek Cypriots’ big display of sophisticated weapon systems they possess was
held within the framework of the so-called 42nd anniversary
of the “Republic of Cyprus”, which has, in fact, ceased to exist.
The
much-expected display of the Russian-made attack helicopters, the M135, were
prevented by an order directly from the Greek Cypriot leader Glafcos Clerides.
At
yesterday’s parade, 175 millimeter self-propelled howitzers were displayed
for the first time, together with motorized and infantry divisions of the
Greek Cypriot National Guard, the Police, the Fire Brigade and the Civil
Defence were also taking part in the show off.
PC-9
aircraft and Gazelle helicopters armed with missiles and two UH/1H ‘Huey’
helicopters for rescue operations also took part at the parade.
