CONDEMNED THE GREEK CYPRIOTS FOR THE PURCHASE OF RUSSIAN ATTACK HELICOPTERS
(06.06.02)
US
Special Coordinator to Cyprus Mr.Thomas Weston has condemned the Greek Cypriot
administration for the purchase of Russian attack helicopters. Responding to
the Anatolian Agency’s questions Mr. Weston said: "Especially now when
the direct talks are ongoing one should avoid to make militaristic steps
including the armament."
Mr.Weston
also added that he would pay a visit to Ankara, Athens and Cyprus in the
coming week and then proceed to Copenhagen, Brussels and Madrid to talk about
Cyprus and the-EU.
Mr.Weston
stressed : "We still think that the core issues would be able to be
agreed until the end of June and I will try to contribute to this by my
visit."
Mr.Weston
added that even though if a settlement could not be achieved by the end of
June the direct talks should continue. He continued: "The end of June is
a target not a deadline." He said that the deadline for the Cyprus
settlements is before the December which EU Summit for enlargement would take
place.
Mr.Weston
concluded: "USA believes that the concerning parties should avoid taking
militaristic steps including the purchase of armaments and increasing the
number of military personnel and also they should minimize the number of
military exercises and things alike that could harm the ongoing talks process
which for the years it has the highest chance for success and maybe is the
last opportunity for the two peoples of island for achieving a settlement that
could protect both of them."
