KIPROS SIMERA
(A GREEK CYPRIOT DAILY): “S-300 MISSILES TO BE BROUGHT TO THE GREEK CYPRIOT
SIDE” (07.10.02)
According to a
Greek Cypriot daily “Kipros Simera”, Russion S-300 missiles which are
currently at Greece’s Crete island, are to be brought to the Greek Cypriot
side with the aim of forming an aircraft umbrella for Europe under the command
of NATO-EU.
It was reported
that the EU by agreeing with the USA and with the initiatives of Greek and
Greek Cypriot administration’s Foreign Ministries, gave out a green light
for the installation of the Russian aircraft missiles in South Cyprus.
It was reported
that Greek Foreign Minister Yorgo Papandreu and the Greek Cypriot Foreign
Minister Yannakis Cassoulides proposed the installation of the S-300 Russian
missiles in South Cyprus which is positioned at an important point of the
EU’s common defence, in order to strengthen the aircraft umbrella of Europe
the event of any conflict with Iraq.
The
installation of the S-300 missiles in South Cyprus which were purchased from
Russia, were prevented by Turkey in December 1998 and therefore were installed
at the Crete island with an agreement between Greece, the Greek Cypriot
administration and Russia. When the installation of these S-300 missiles in
South Cyprus prevented, Greece gave the Greek Cypriot administration a TOR-M1
missile purchased from Russia.
