PURCHASE
OF SPY PLANES ON GREEK CYPRIOT AGENDA (08.07.02)
In
a closed meeting on July 4, which lasted for approximately three hours, the
Greek Cypriot Assembly’s Defence Committee discussed the necessity of
purchasing spy planes and again took the decision to open a tender.
According
to the Greek Cypriot daily “Fileleftheros”,
since the Israeli company “Aeronautics” won the previous tender,
the Greek Cypriot Assembly did not approve the payment of the related
expenditure and had direct contacts with the other companies which
participated in the tender.
However,
the Greek Cypriot Assembly did not like this method since Israel was also
included in the direct contacts and wanted to open a new tender for purchasing
the spy planes.
It was
reported that the Greek Cypriot Defence Ministry accepted the Committee’s
demand and will request the Central Tender Commission to determine the new
criteria and standards required for opening a new tender.
According to another Greek
Cypriot daily “Haravgi”, in order to further strengthen Greek Cypriot
defence, no limit was set for the Defence Committee’s budget to purchase air
planes.
