CYPRIOT REARMAMENT PROGRAMS CONTINUE AT FULL SPEED (11.12.2003)

Cypriot dailies reported that while speaking at a ceremony to upgrade the
Greek Cypriot National Guard’s 8th Infantry Regiment to the 8th
Infantry Brigade, Greek Cypriot Defence Minister, Kiriakos Mavronikolas, said
the Greek Cypriot National Guard, acting independently from political efforts
to reach a settlement on the Cyprus issue, was continuing with its rearmament
program and it was out of the question for it to freeze these programs.
Pointing
out that the upgrading of the infantry regiment to a Brigade level was the
first step in ensuring the Greek Cypriot National Guard’s adjustment to the
re-organization of the Greek forces, Mavronikolas said they had examined the
changes that had been made to the Greek Armed Forces and efforts were being
undertaken on certain decisions that would be taken next year regarding the
changes that would be made to the Greek Cypriot National Guard.
