At a period when the doors of the EU have
opened for the Greek Cypriots, and discussions over the Annan plan are
continuing with the aim of finding a settlement to the Cyprus issue, the
Greek Cypriot side is continuing with its rearmament efforts in full force.
The number of armoured personnel carriers
of the Greek Cypriot National Guard, have increased from 26 to 42, who are
deployed at the "Haci Proskopiou Barracks", 1-2kms away from Tseri
in south Lefkosa.
Not so long ago, the Greek Cypriots
established the 5th tank battalion in Matyat and purchased Valuk
type Slovakian armoured battle vehicles.
Even while the negotiation process was
continuing, efforts by the Greek Cypriot sideto largely change its (weapons)
inventory and the completion of the mechanized units with armoured vehicles,
was evaluated as being that the Greek Cypriots, instead of carrying out
these efforts for defence purpose, are making preparations for an armoured
attack.
