GREEK
CYPRIOTS CONTINUE TO REARM (29.01.02)
According
to the Greek Cypriot press as reported in the Turkish Cypriot dailies the
Greek Cypriot administration is being pressured by foreign diplomats to remove
high-tech National Guard weapon systems from the island.
The
dailies reported that the Greek Cypriot administration is increasing the
number of fighter helicopters it has recently purchased. The Greek Cypriot
administration recently purchased MIL-MI35 type fighter helicopters from
Russia and is being pressured by the U.S to remove them from Cyprus.
Referring
to the issue the leader of the Greek Cypriot administration, Glafcos Clerides,
said that no decision had been or would be taking concerning the removal of
any National Guard systems.
Again
on the issue, DISY deputy Antonis Karas stated that, “we won’t consent to
weakening our defence in light of the talks…”
