SHOKING RATE OF INCREASE IN
DRUG ADDICTION (04.09.2002)
The
Greek Cypriot daily Phileleftheros and other Greek Cypriot dailies reported
(04.09.2002) that the increase in drug addiction rate especially among the
youngsters is terrifying both the public and the Greek Cypriot police. The
newspaper wrote that the drug addiction problem has started nearly to threat
each household of South Cyprus and the scary nightmare has been horrifying by
its tragic ends the families by an increasing trend.
According
to Phileleftheros, a family living in Limasol found their 22-year-old son in
the bathroom lying unconsciously. The young man was rushed to hospital and he
is receiving medical treatment in intensive care section. The police found two
drug injectors in the search of the young man’s house. The young man is
believed to be a new victim of the drug addiction.
The
newspaper stated in another headline that Greek Cypriot Drug Department of the
police has arrested three Greek Cypriots for using and trading drugs. Andreas
Hrisfoti (33) and two others were caught with heroin and arrested.
Phileleftheros
on its 31st August 2002 issue wrote that most of the Greek Cypriot students
who are studying abroad are drug addicts especially addicted to cocaine.
The
newspaper added that the number of overseas studying Greek Cypriot students
who applied for help to the “The Association for Receiving Drug Addiction”
and “The Center for Therapy and Rehabilitation for Drug Addicts” has
reached to a terrifying level.
According
to the newspaper the Director of the Rehabilitation Center Mr. Kiriakos
Veresies stated that they during the summers the Center receive lots of
applications for help from the overseas studying Greek Cypriot students.
