DRUG
PROBLEM INCREASING DAILY IN SOUTH CYPRUS (24.06.02)
According
to an article in various Greek Cypriot dailies, as reported in the Turkish
Cypriot press, the drug problem in South Cyprus is increasing daily at an
alarming level and the Greek Cypriot "Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation
Centre (KENTHEA)" expressing its grave concern about the issue criticized
the Greek Cypriot administration for failing to contribute to efforts to
prevent drug use.
According
to the article, KENTHEA stated that drug use and its spread have reached
extremely dangerous levels and the use of heroin, in particular, is deeply
worrying.
Meanwhile,
on June 21 in a search carried out in one of the villages in Famagusta, Greek
Cypriot police discovered 64 roll-up cigarettes containing narcotic
substances. Greek Cypriot police confiscated the cigarettes and a Greek
Cypriot youth was also arrested for possession of roll-up cigarettes. It was
reported that in a search carried out in the home of the Greek Cypriot youth,
cannabis, 5 roll-up cigarettes, a bag of gun powder, 15 empty and 13 live
