UN SECURITY COUNCIL DISCUSSED CYPRUS…
COUNCIL CALLED FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF 8TH JULY AGREEMENT

The UN Security Council held a meeting on Cyprus and announced that it was in favour of a comprehensive settlement in Cyprus and supports the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan’s efforts in this direction.

In the meeting, the UN Undersecretary General Responsible for Political Affairs Ýbrahim Gambari, informed the Security Council members on the recent developments of the Cyprus issue and about his contacts made in the region in July.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting the UN Security Council’s Term President, Ghana’s Permanent Representative Nana Effaf-Apenteg, pointed out that he supported the UN Secretary General’s continuing efforts for the comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus issue.

Within this framework, Apenteg expressed his pleasure over the agreement reached between the two sides in July, which foresees the start of talks for the establishment of the technical committees. He also stated that the Council believed the two sides should fully implement the 8 July Agreement without any delay.

Pointing to the fact that the two parties in Cyprus have different views on this issue, Apenteg said these differences could only be overcome through negotiations. He continued by saying that there were still lots of steps to be taken for reaching the comprehensive settlement, and said they wanted the resumption of the comprehensive negotiations.

The Finnish Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja, also called for the implementation of the 8th July Agreement which he described as “encouraging”.

Meanwhile, after the meeting the UN Security Council issuing a statement called for the implementation of the commitment on 5 point “Series of Principles” without delay. The Council also called for the start of the necessary works for the fully implementation of the commitment.

In a written statement issued yesterday by the TRNC Presidential office, the UN Security council’s statement in favor of a comprehensive solution was welcomed.

Presidential Spokesman Hasan Erçakýca also drew attention to the UN Security Council Term of President’s call for the resumption of the Cyprus negotiations process.

The Presidential spokesman also expressed the view that the emphasis made by the UN Security Council for the full implementation of the 8th July Agreement will contribute to efforts aimed at achieving a comprehensive settlement on the island.
