UN SECURITY
COUNCIL DISCUSSED CYPRUS…
COUNCIL CALLED FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF 8TH JULY
AGREEMENT
The UN Security Council held a
meeting on Cyprus and announced that it was in favour of a
comprehensive settlement in Cyprus and supports the UN Secretary
General Kofi Annan’s efforts in this direction.
In the meeting, the UN
Undersecretary General Responsible for Political Affairs Ýbrahim
Gambari, informed the Security Council members on the recent
developments of the Cyprus issue and about his contacts made in
the region in July.
Speaking to reporters after
the meeting the UN Security Council’s Term President, Ghana’s
Permanent Representative Nana Effaf-Apenteg, pointed out that he
supported the UN Secretary General’s continuing efforts for the
comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus issue.
Within this framework, Apenteg
expressed his pleasure over the agreement reached between the
two sides in July, which foresees the start of talks for the
establishment of the technical committees. He also stated that
the Council believed the two sides should fully implement the 8
July Agreement without any delay.
Pointing to the fact that the
two parties in Cyprus have different views on this issue,
Apenteg said these differences could only be overcome through
negotiations. He continued by saying that there were still lots
of steps to be taken for reaching the comprehensive settlement,
and said they wanted the resumption of the comprehensive
negotiations.
The Finnish Foreign Minister
Erkki Tuomioja, also called for the implementation of the 8th
July Agreement which he described as “encouraging”.
Meanwhile, after the meeting
the UN Security Council issuing a statement called for the
implementation of the commitment on 5 point “Series of
Principles” without delay. The Council also called for the start
of the necessary works for the fully implementation of the
commitment.
In a written statement issued
yesterday by the TRNC Presidential office, the UN Security
council’s statement in favor of a comprehensive solution was
welcomed.
Presidential Spokesman Hasan
Erçakýca also drew attention to the UN Security Council Term of
President’s call for the resumption of the Cyprus negotiations
process.
The Presidential spokesman
also expressed the view that the emphasis made by the UN
Security Council for the full implementation of the 8th July
Agreement will contribute to efforts aimed at achieving a
comprehensive settlement on the island.
