PRIME MINISTER SOYER: "GREEK CYPRIOT
ADMINISTRATION DOES NOT RESPECT TURKISH CYPRIOTS…"
Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer said the Greek Cypriot
administration has sent a memorandum to all embassies accredited to South
Cyprus requesting them not to meet with the President, Prime Minister,
ministers, political parties and civil servants in state buildings as well
as with academicians in universities in North Cyprus.
Indicating that this initiative demonstrated the Greek
Cypriot administration did not take into consideration the
institutionalised structure of the Turkish Cypriot people, Prime Minister
Soyer said this attitude was meaningless and fanatical and a sign of
disrespect against the Turkish Cypriots.
WARNING TO AMBASSADORS: "DO NOT TO MEET WITH ANY
TURKISH CYPRIOTS IN STATE BUILDINGS"
Commenting on the Greek Cypriot side's memorandum
warning all ambassadors in South Cyprus "not to meet with anyone in state
buildings" in the North, the Prime Minister said:
"In other words, when people cross over to the North,
they will only be able to walk on the roads. They will not be able to meet
with any Turkish Cypriots in their institution. At this point, the Greek
Cypriot side's stance, just like it was during British Foreign Secretary
Jack Straw's visit, has once more been highlighted in the process leading
up to (the US State Department's Deputy Undersecretary) Mathew Bryza's
forthcoming visit to the island, and indicates that the Greek Cypriot
administration do not take the institutionalised structure of the Turkish
Cypriot people into consideration. This is very meaningless and fanatical
and up until now it has always been a political line that every Greek
Cypriot political leadership has followed. In order to further increase
his intransigence and protect his status quo, the Papadopoulos
administration is disrespecting our people by adopting a stance that
completely ignores the existence of the Turkish Cypriot people, is trying
to get them off the agenda and turn them into a simple minority ".
"CONTRADICTION AND INSINCERITY"
Calling upon the Papadopoulos administration not to
forget that the UN Secretary-General's call to resume the negotiations was
aimed at settling the Cyprus problem and that Papadopoulos would be
sitting opposite President Talat at the negotiating table, Prime Minister
Soyer said: "Under what right and authority can Mr. Papadopoulos, who will
sit opposite Mr. Talat at the negotiating table, continue with his
political initiatives to reject the Turkish Cypriot people's
institutionalised structure? This is an incident that clearly highlights
his own contradiction and insincerity and is an approach that considers
the Turkish Cypriot people to be totally non-existent".
The Prime Minister said he believed Papadopoulos had
put these new requests onto the agenda because he was frightened of the
Turkish Cypriot people's will for a settlement. He added: "We will
overcome these fears and with a policy full of logic, conscious and in
line with world democratic values, the Turkish Cypriot people will
overcome these backward attacks".
