TALAT MET POLITICAL PARTY LEADERS AND REPRESENTATIVES

President Mehmet Ali Talat met leaders and representatives of political parties with seats in the TRNC parliament yesterday (11 July).

Meeting was attended by Prime Minister, Republican Turkish Party-United Forces Leader Ferdi Sabit Soyer, the party’s General Secretary Omer Kalyoncu, Foreign Minister, the Leader of the Democrat Party Serdar Denktas, the party’s General Secretary Ertugrul Hasipoglu and   Atay Ahmet Rasid, the leader of National Unity Party Huseyin Ozgurgun, the party’s General Secretary Turgay Avci, the Peace and Democracy Movement General Secretary Mehmet Cakici and the party’s  Head of Lefkosa District Ozgun Kutalmis.

Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer speaking after the meeting,  said with the arrival of the UN Secretary General’s Undersecretary to the island, İbrahim Gambari   the Turkish side had again  found  the opportunity  to keep the Cyprus issue based  on the UN principles,  in spite of the Greek Cypriot side’s  dominative stance to solve it  on the EU principles.

He said they will constructively   evaluate this  situation, which has two points, first the start of the  studies on the technical issues relating daily life and the second    the start of  the studies on  substantial issues, which was parallel to the first one  and be conducted under the supervision of the two leaders.

Serdar Denktas   responding to a question on  the technical  committees, said conducting simultaneous negotiations both on the technical issues and substantial   issues was agreed  as a method  at the last meeting,  and that they  put forward  their evaluations and any  dangers (if existed) of this method  and conveyed the President their views. Stating that the Presidency and the Foreign Ministry was in fact in consultation on various issues said, from now on, they were going to define the subject titles and discuss them in front of the community. He added that it was to early for more detailed explanation since they were going to discuss these issues among themselves first.

National Unity Party Leader Huseyin Ozgurgun said “the UBP was following the process  carefully and with restraint, because we have serious  suspects regarding Papadopoulos  and the Greek Cypriot sides’  aim. Therefore, we conveyed this views to the president.”

Peace and democracy Movement General Secretary Cakıcı pointed out that  a picture displaying the sides as wanting peace was driven    however, this was not  reflecting the realities. “Turkish Cypriot’s need was to take necessary steps for an urgent solution and  with a clear approach and  proposals  to struggle for this” he added.
