MUNICIPAL LOCAL AND BY-ELECTIONS HELD IN TRNC
Turkish
Cypriots yesterday went to ballot for the eighth times since 1974 and
elected their local and municipal administrators. As the result of
yesterday’s municipal, local and by-elections, mayors, municipality
council members, mukhtars, village council members and the two members
of the TRNC parliament were elected.
According to the latest unofficial results of the elections in the
TRNC, as released by the High Electoral Council, where the voter
participation was 75%, in municipal and local elections, the National
Unity Party (UBP) has won 10 out of the 28 municipalities, while the
Republican Turkish Party (CTP) won 8, Democrat Party (DP) 7 and in 3
municipalities, independent candidates won the seats for Mayor.
The
results of the 5 district municipalities are as follows:
Cemal
Bulutoglulari from the DP has become the new Mayor of Lefkosa. In
Girne, the CTP candidate Sumer Aygin has been re-elected as the Mayor
of the city. In Gazimagusa, CTP candidate Oktay Kayalp has also been
re-elected. In Guzelyurt, the UBP candidate Mahmut Ozcinar has been
re-elected. UBP candidate, Halil Ibrahim Orun won the municipal
elections in Iskele.
Meanwhile, according to the unofficial results of the bi-elections in
the Lefkoşa and Girne Constituencies as released by the High Electoral
Council, CTP candidates has won two seats in the parliament.
Following the elections, the CTP’s number of seats in the TRNC
parliament increased to 25 from 23, where UBP has 17, DP 7 and BDH 1
seats.
