EU ARLIAMENTARIAN OZDEMIR: "EU SHOULDN'T FORGET ITS PROMISE MADE TO TURKISH CYPRIOTS"

The European Parliament's German member of Turkish origin, Cem Ozdemir said: "While the EU is calling on Turkey to fulfil its responsibilities stemming from the Ankara Agreement, the EU must also keep its promise made to the Turkish Cypriots".

Speaking during the European Parliament's General Assembly session, Ozdemir indicating that the pro-settlement Turkish Cypriots should not be punished in Cyprus, said as it promised before, the EU should lift the economic isolations imposed upon the TRNC. He said this was a matter of prestige for the EU.

EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT DEBATES NAME OF TURKISH CYPRIOT CONTACT GROUP

It has been requested to change the name of the North Cyprus High Level Contact Group, that was set up by the European Parliament with the aim of further developing relations and dialogue with the Turkish Cypriots, to the "European Parliament's Turkish Cypriots High Level Contact Group".

It has been stated that the change in name was proposed to "clearly put forward the fact that the Contact Group had dialogue with the Turkish Cypriots". It is expected that this proposal will be approved at the Conference of the Heads of the European Parliament.

The Contact Group, which consists of all political party representatives in the European Parliament, made its first visit to the TRNC at the beginning of March 2006, and it was stated that the second visit is expected to be made in June 2006.
