PAPADOPOULOS FAR FROM  SETTLEMENT

The Turkish Foreign Ministry’s Spokesman Namýk Tan stated that Greek Cypriot Leader Papadopoulos’  statement  made “in face of  the possibility of the   TRNC’s recognition by the USA or other third countries”  showed how far he was from  the realities and settlement efforts and  exposed his   real intentions.

Papadopoulos speaking to Greek daily Elefteros Tipos published in Athens,  referring to Condoleezza Rice’s recent visit to Athens  said,  they would not  sacrifice  from Cyprus’s Hellenism prospect    for the sake of  gaining sympathy of the USA.

Pointing out that it was USA’s  firm policy to spend efforts  to upgrade the TRNC’s status, Papadopoulos  stated that within the framework  the agreement he made with Annan, it was agreed that  a dialogue based on only  technical issues to be started  with the  TRNC,  however, the Turkish Cypriot side was only in favor of discussing daily issues  and in the event of this happening  the Turkish Cypriot side would function    as a separate  state.

Papadopoulos’ mentality is pre-1960

Meanwhile, in an interview given to a French journal L’Express, Papadopoulos stated  that  82% of the population in Cyprus was Greek  Cypriots,  88%  of the properties belonged to Greek Cypriots and that they strongly oppose to a state  structure envisaging two separate region and people.

Explaining why the Greek Cypriot side rejected the Annan Plan, Papdopuolos  underlined that they would   never accept an agreement which didn’t envisage a  state  where there was a single territory, people, economy and  institutions.
