Imre Sooaar and a member of the Commission of European Affairs Mart Nutt
exchanged views with Foreign Minister Turgay Avcı on the isolations
imposed upon of the Turkish Cypriot people, the Finland’s proposal, the
Greek Cypriot side’s negative stance and possible aids to be provided for
the Turkish Cypriot people by the European Union.
During the meeting, Foreign Minister Turgay Avcı stated
that the Turkish Cypriot side is ready for negotiations with the Greek
Cypriot side on the basis of political equality.
PERTEV: "FINLAND IS TRYING TO BRING THE
SIDES TOGETHER BEFORE THE END OF DECEMBER"
The Presidential Undersecretary Rasit Pertev speaking
on the Bayrak Radio yesterday (1 November) made comments on Finland’s
proposal.
Pertev describing the Finnish efforts as an initiative
aimed at opening Turkey’s way towards the European Union membership said
Finland was searching for a basis to bring parties together before the end
of December.
Pertev added that once that basis is formed, the
proposal would be officially presented on paper and thus achieve a
concrete form.
Pertev stated that in case these proposals reached a
conclusion within the framework of a good will, the Turkish Cypriot side
would do its best because the Turkish Cypriots desired a solution. He
added that however, while doing this the Turkish Cypriot side would not
sacrifice its own interests.
Pertev underlined that at this stage they were
conveying the Turkish Cypriot side’s views.
Accusing the Greek Cypriot administration of using its
EU membership against Turkey, Raşit Pertev said the Greek Cypriot
administration would be affected most if Turkey’s EU membership came to a
halt and the Greek Cypriots would not be able to pressurize Turkey
regarding its EU membership by using Turkish Cypriots.
