PRESIDENCY: “WE WILL SUPPORT EVERY KIND OF EFFORT THAT WOULD HELP TO START THE COMPREHENSIVE NEGOTIATIONS”

GOVERNMENT RESIGNED

Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer yesterday (11 September) visited President Mehmet Ali Talat and presented resignation of the Republican Turkish Party/United Forces (CTP-BG) and Democratic Party (DP) Coalition Government.

President Mehmet Ali Talat speaking during the acceptance of the Government’s resignation stated that after meeting with all the political parties represented in the TRNC Parliament, he would decide on to which political party to give the duty to form the government.

For his part, Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer pointed out that CTP/BG-DP Coalition Government which was formed after the Presidential elections last year, worked to perform their duty within the framework of “settlement and restructuring program” during their term of duty.

PRESIDENCY: “WE WILL SUPPORT EVERY KIND OF EFFORT THAT WOULD HELP TO START THE COMPREHENSIVE NEGOTIATIONS”

TRNC Presidential Spokesperson Hasan Ercakica, yesterday issued a written statement and stressed that the Turkish Cypriot side would support every kind of effort, which would help starting the comprehensive negotiations for a comprehensive settlement including the 8 July commitment.

Ercakica referring to Greek Cypriot leader Tassos Papadopoulos’ and Greek Cypriot Foreign Minister Yorgos Lillikas’ statements appeared in the Greek Cypriot press during the weekend said they openly stated that they did not support the efforts for finding a settlement to the Cyprus issue through negotiations. Continuing Ercakica said:

“While the Cyprus issue should be solved through negotiations and the relations between the two peoples and diplomatic developments in the region are being negatively affected as a result of the fact that this process has not been started, the attitude of the two most authorized persons of the Greek Cypriot administration could not be accepted.” He said, preliminary preparations, analysis and research on the basic parameters of the Cyprus issue, which Papadopoulos was trying to put as a precondition for the start of the comprehensive negotiations was aimed at degrading the Cyprus issue from being a political problem to an academic problem.

Stating that for long years, the Cyprus issue has been taken up by the two leaders, UN representatives and the related parties many times, Ercakica pointing to the thousand pages UN documents on this issue, especially the Annan plan said:

“People who want to carry out an academic study on the Cyprus issue could use these documents as well as hundreds of articles written by Turkish Cypriot, Greek Cypriot and foreign academicians. However, in order to solve the Cyprus issue, rather than academic studies, there is a need for a political will and comprehensive negotiations, which would be carried out with this will. As the Turkish Cypriot side we are ready to start comprehensive negotiations and do not need to make any analysis or research for this.”
