EUROPEAN
PARLIAMENTARIANS OF TURKISH ORIGIN VISIT LOKMACI
The delegation of
Turkish MEPs who came to the TRNC in order to attend the Second
North Cyprus Summit, yesterday (20 April) visited Lokmacı
region.
In a joint statement
issued by the delegation, Sevgi Hamuroglu (a MEP of Turkish
origin) expressed pleasure to find the opportunity to observe
the recent political developments in Cyprus as “European
politicians”.
The statement
expressing support to the process started on 21 March, said they
hoped the negotiations to start between the two sides would
bring a solution based on political equality without further
delay.
Pointing out that
the opening of the Lokmacı border gate was the first indication
of the cordial atmosphere in the island the statement noted that
if the two sides continued to take steps which would bring the
two peoples close to each other, the way towards a settlement
would be shortened and the mutual trust between the two peoples
would increase.
Stressing that within this process the EU should urgently keep
its promises to end the isolation imposed on the Turkish
Cypriots who have proved their determination towards a solution,
peace and EU membership the statement said the continuation of
efforts for integrating the Turkish Cypriot people with the EU
was vital for the reunification of the island.
