“EMBARGOED” SENDS A LETTER TO
GORDON BROWN
Turkish Cypriots living in the UK has drawn
attention to the unjust isolation imposed upon the Turkish
Cypriot people and requested the lifting of the isolation
immediately.
“Embargoed” Group which was established in
the UK with the aim of helping to end the unjust isolation
imposed on the Turkish Cypriots, in an activity organized
within the framework of the anniversary of the April 2004
referendum on the Annan plan placed importance to the
isolation of the Turkish Cypriots.
In a letter sent to British Prime Minister
Gordon Brown the Group requested the return of the “vested
rights” of the Turkish Cypriots and reminded the promises
given to Turkish Cypriots for the lifting of the embargoes.
The Group expressed their disappointment
for the fact that although four years have passed since the
referendum, not a single embargo has been lifted.
Pointing to the fact that Turkish Cypriots
have been deprived of their basic rights for more than 40
years, the Chairman of the Embargoed Fevzi Huseyin said
although Cyprus has become an EU member in theory, Turkish
Cypriot who approved the Annan plan found themselves as being
excluded from the EU.
Referring to the possibility of the start
of the new negotiations, Huseyin said the Turkish Cypriots’
hope, patience and beliefs cannot be ignored by postponing the
lifting of the embargoes for an uncertain future and
settlement. Huseyin noted that the delaying tactics by the EU
and the UK have already disappointed the Turkish Cypriots.
