TALAT : “WE EXPECT A NEW INITIATIVE FROM THE UN
SECRETARY GENERAL”
TRNC President Mehmet Ali Talat, in an interview
given to Greek Cypriot daily Alithia stated that he
was waiting a new initiative form the UN Secretary
General to restart talks on Cyprus.
Responding to Greek Cypriot accusations of
intransigency for the Turkish side, the President
said the intransigent side was not the Turkish side
but Papadopolous administration.
Referring to the 8 July Agreement President Talat
said, it was an agreement for the pre-preparation
period of a possible settlement, which we accepted
in principle, however after realized that the
real aim of Papadopolous was to use delaying
tactics for postponing a settlement.
President Talat said he expected that there would
be a new UN-led drive to restart talks on
reunification between the Turkish and Greek Cypriot
sides after the presidential elections in South
Cyprus in February.
Talat referring to his recent visit to Ankara said
he agreed with the Turkish authorities in Ankara
that a new partnership can be established between
the two sides on Cyprus on the basis of the
political equality of two founding states.
He added that the Turkish side was still continuing
to spent efforts for finding a bi-communal, bi-zonnal
federation on the basis of two founding states.
President Talat pointed out that if the
negotiations started and there existed a positive
atmosphere in Cyprus he believed both Turkey and
Greece would play a constructive role for a
settlement.
President said “I am expecting to sit at the
negotiation table with the new Greek Cypriot
president to be elected”.
PRIME MINISTER SOYER: “WE HAVE NO TIME TO WAIT FOR
THE SETTLEMENT OF THE CYPRUS ISSUE”
In an interview published in Greek Cypriot daily
Alithia, Prime Minister Soyer stressed that no
more time should be lost for the settlement of the
Cyprus issue and said “ we believe we have no time
to wait for the settlement of the Cyprus issue”
Prime Minister pointed out that if the negotiations
started and a mutually acceptable settlement for
reuniting the island was agreed by both sides and
submitted to a referenda then he believed 85 % of
Turkish Cypriots would say “Yes”. Prime Minister
Soyer added that property issue can be solved
within the framework a political settlement.

On the 50th anniversary of the events of
27-28 January, which was an important turning
pointing in Turkish Cypriot people’s struggle for
existence, we remember once more our beloved
Martyrs, who sacrificed their lives to make these
lands our homeland.
27-28 January is an important landmark in the
struggle for existence of Turkish Cypriots, who
refused to yield to the Greek-Greek Cypriot
persecution and their aim at uniting the island
with Greece- Enosis and displayed their
determination to resist against British
colonialism.
On 27-28 January 1958, Turkish Cypriot people with
their heroic resistance clearly proved to the world
that they wanted to live as free people on the
island of Cyprus.
This important event which was written in the
annals of Turkish Cypriot history with golden
letters as “A Day of Communal Struggle and
Resistance Against Colonialism”, is a symbol of
the struggle of our people against the Greek
Cypriots who aimed at depriving the Turkish
Cypriot people of their right to exist as free
people.
On the 50th anniversary of 27-28 January,
we once more commemorate and remember our beloved
martyrs with respect and gratitude and we salute
our courageous veterans.
