NEW PROCESS BEGINS TODAY
NAMI-YAKOVOU TO MEET TODAY
The new negotiations process in Cyprus that has
begun with Friday’s (21 March) meeting between
President Mehmet Ali Talat and the Leader of the
Greek Cypriot administration Demetris
Christofias is expected to gain its shape today
(24 March).
The Presidential senior aide
Ozdil Nami and the Greek Cypriot aide Yorgos
Yakovu will meet today afternoon at the UN
Special Representative to Cyprus Michael
Moller’s residence in the UN-controlled buffer
zone.
The two aides will discuss
the formation of technical committees and
working groups as envisaged for the new
negotiations process.
According to the Greek
Cypriot press, Yakovou pointed out that he would
meet Nami everyday this week and their target
was to complete the formation of technical
committees and working groups before the
expected visit by the UN delegation to the
island next week.
Stating that 5-7 technical
committees and 5-7 working groups would be
formed, Yakovou said sub-committees would also
be set up for completing the studies on
negotiation subjects, thus preparing a basis for
a possible comprehensive settlement.
The UN delegation headed by
the UN Under-Secretary-General for Political
Affairs Lynn Pascoe is expected to come to the
island on the 31st of March or 1st
of April.
