OIC SECRETARY GENERAL IHSANOGLU: “OIC IS REJECTING THE
ILLEGITIMATE EMBARGOES”
The Secretary
General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) Ekmeleddin
Ihsanoglu who is currently holding contacts in the TRNC met with President
Mehmet Ali Talat, Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer and Deputy Prime Minister
and Minister of Foreign Affairs Turgay Avcý. Ihsanoglu also received an
honorary doctorate bestowed on him by the Near East University yesterday (12
May).
Speaking
during the ceremony at the Near East University Ihsanoglu stressed that the
OIC has been rejecting the international isolation of the Turkish Cypriot
people and that this was the main policy of the OIC. Ihsanoglu pointed to
the fact that the OIC was implementing the decisions which were taken by the
consensus of its 57 members.
Pointing out
that the support of the Islamic countries to the Turkish Cypriots would
continue Ihsanoglu expressed hope that the comprehensive settlement
negotiations would start soon and the two sides reach a just, permanent and
comprehensive solution based on political equality. Ihsanoglu said
the
OIC would support all kinds of processes which would result in a just,
permanent and a comprehensive solution in Cyprus.
Speaking
during his visit to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs
Turgay Avcý Ihsanoglu said the OIC was rejecting the illegitimate embargoes
imposed upon the TRNC.
Ihsanoglu
reiterated the OIC’s support of a just and bi-zonal agreement on the basis
of political equality of the two sides under the aegis of the United
Nations.
For his part,
Foreign Minister Avcý stated that the decisions taken by the OIC towards the
lifting of the unjust isolation of the Turkish Cypriots were very important
and expressed pleasure for the OIC’s calls upon its member countries for
ending the isolation.
Expressing
pleasure for the visit of Ihsanoglu, Avcý said this visit has once more
built the morale of the Turkish Cypriot people who have been striving to end
the unjust isolation.
Referring to
the Cyprus issue, Avcý said the Turkish Cypriot side was in favor of a just,
permanent, bi-zonal and comprehensive settlement on the basis of political
equality and the continuation of Turkey’s effective guarantee. Avcý added
that in this context the technical studies were continuing.
The OIC
Secretary General Ekemeleddin Ihsanoglu has left the island after completing
his contacts last night.
