TALAT AND CHRISTOFIAS MEETS TODAY
President Mehmet Ali Talat and Greek Cypriot leader
Demetris Christofias are going to meet today in order to evaluate the work
being carried out by the working groups and technical committees prior to
the comprehensive negotiations which are expected to start in June.
President Talat and Greek Cypriot Leader Christofias will
meet at 11.00 in the morning at the residence of the UN Secretary General’s
Special Representative for Cyprus Taye-Brook Zerihoun.
President Talat’s Special Representative in Negotiations
with the European Union and the United Nations Ozdil Nami and senior aide to
Christofias George Iacovou will also attend the meeting.
Presidential Spokesman Hasan Ercakica stating that the
results produced by the working groups and technical committees would be
taken up during the meeting, said there was a possibility that Christofias
would suggest to postpone the fully-fledged negotiations which were expected
to start on the 21st of June.
PRIME MINISTER SOYER AND FOREIGN MINISTER
AVCI IN ANKARA
Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer, Deputy Prime Minister
and Minister of Foreign Affairs Turgay Avcý and Minister of Finance Ahmet
Uzun who went to Ankara, started their contacts by meeting with Turkish
Deputy Prime Minister and State Minister for Cyprus Affairs Cemil Cicek.
Following the meeting, where the Cyprus issue, economic
issues and the issue of drought were taken up, the meetings between the TRNC
and Turkish delegations took place.
Prime Minister Soyer stated that they have reiterated the
determination of the Turkish Cypriot side and Turkey towards finding a
solution in Cyprus within the framework of the countries’ joint policy and
also confirmed the aid to be provided by Turkey for overcoming the problems
arouse as result of the drought.
Soyer pointed out that they also reiterated the two
countries’ determination towards the establishment of a partnership in
Cyprus on the basis of the political equality of the two peoples and two
constituent states, within the framework of the UN parameters and federal
principles and under the Turkish Republic’s effective guarantee.
Soyer added that during their meeting with Cemil Cicel
they discussed the issues of improving the living standards in the TRNC and
overcoming the structural problems in the Turkish Cypriot economy.
